Fonduementale, 4325 St.-Denis. Mtro Mont-Royal, go South one block just past Marie-Anne. Keep room for desert. Last I went, it was C$15-20 for the main dish (which, notably, is not an "entree" since the entre in Qubec is rightfully the appetizer). And worth every penny. Especially the time I got the US government to reimburse me. The Tibetan place: Shambala, 3439 St.-Denis. Mtro Sherbrooke, it's the first block North of Sherbrooke. Get the dumplings. And lots of other stuff; very good. They have meat too, if you have to convince anyone. http://english.montrealplus.ca/portal/profile.do?profileID=821138 Other places to eat: all up and down St.-Denis. Avoid Zyng's (yes, the very same Zyng's that once infected Pittsburgh; it's *based* in Montreal, inexplicably) and various other similar crap-asian restaurants -- there's too much good food to be had. There's also the Plateau Mont-Royal, around Boul. St.-Laurent. Rue Prince Arthur is a pedestrian way, and has lots of restaurants on it. I went to a viet place there that was good; avoid the greek places which exist to rip you off and like to brag about how vegetarian friendly they are because they have greek salad. There are lots of places in that area; check a guide. Vieux-Montral has lots of restaurants, including a *very* yummy crpe place which I would recommend by name if only I remembered it (second floor of some side street, near a bunch of inuit art shops. Too bad this description is utterly useless since the entire area is like that). The area will generally be touristy, meaning hit-or-miss, but again, guides will tell you where to avoid, and where to seek out. The main touristy drag, of course, is to be avoided at all costs for food (except maybe the Ben & Jerry's), but often has circusy acts that can be fun to watch, though April is a bit in the off season. Premire Moisson has the best pastries; Pain Dor has the best bread (both local chains). PM also does sit-down; ask for the pain grill. It's toast, sure, but it's *really good* toast. Second Cup and van Houtte are decent starbucks-alikes; avoid Caf-Presse.
