Interestingly enough, when I was at an Ani show at the Rex a few months ago, the show was non-smoking, as "the artist" had requested it. I think more musicians could make a difference if they made this same request: why should they have to work in a smoky environment?

Here in Portland, they're working on a smoking ban - but, of course, there's a loophole. They've made an exception to allow smoking in cigar bars.

Gee, do you think we'll suddenly see a lot of bars become 'cigar bars'?

J--Yeah, there's that great place with lavender martinis on 21st and Glisan that is unfortunately also a cigar bar. I was always torn between having a great martini and coming home smelly. Usually I gave up the martini.

C--I wonder if many musicians know they have the option. I've seen Club Cafe non-smokey a couple of times because of artist request, but I wonder if TMBG would have requested it if they'd known they could?

I just found out from a Brit friend's blog that the UK is passing a smoking ban, going into effect July 1:

And I've been told that France (or Paris?) is considering a ban, even though there are a crazy number of smokers, because they think the health benefits to everyone are worthwhile.

I'd be interested to know if Mr. Small's would allow a non-smoking show, or if musicians could consider including that in their requirements: 3 bottles of water on stage, fruit and nuts in the green room, and a non-smoking venue. Hmm.

I saw Mates of State at Mr. Small's, and it was a non-smoking show at their request. (And it was WONDERFUL.)

Lots of places in France are non-smoking, last I knew. (A month ago.) Not sure if that was a legislated thing or not... I am thinking it was.

Oh, right, now I remember why I never go hear music in this city. I'd almost forgotten and was about to go to a show.

I'm just gonna go ahead and say that They have probably forgotten how bad it was back when they were playing Metropol and Laga. Their CMU concert must've spoiled 'em. :)
